Why September is One of East Yorkshire's Best Kept Secrets

Sarah Dean • September 8, 2026

Discover quieter beaches, beautiful countryside and relaxing autumn escapes during one of the best times to visit East Yorkshire

As the school summer holidays come to an end, East Yorkshire begins to settle into a slower, more peaceful rhythm. The beaches become quieter, the roads less busy, and there's a real sense of calm that makes September one of the most enjoyable times to visit.

For many guests, it's a hidden gem of the calendar. The weather is often still pleasantly warm, the countryside remains beautifully green, and there's more space to enjoy everything the region has to offer.

At Pasture House Holiday Cottages, September is one of our favourite times of year, offering the perfect balance of relaxation, exploration and countryside charm

Enjoy Quieter Beaches

One of the biggest advantages of visiting in September is having the coastline to yourself.

Fraisthorpe Beach feels wonderfully peaceful after the summer holidays, making it the perfect place for a long walk, a paddle in the sea or simply sitting back and enjoying the fresh coastal air.

If you prefer a traditional seaside atmosphere, Bridlington remains full of charm, but with fewer crowds and a more relaxed pace than during peak summer.

The Yorkshire Wolds Are Beautiful in Early Autumn

September is a wonderful time to explore the Yorkshire Wolds.

The landscape begins its gentle transition into autumn, creating stunning scenery for walkers, cyclists and photographers alike.

If you're looking for a longer walk, sections of the Yorkshire Wolds Way offer spectacular views across rolling countryside, while nearby villages provide plenty of opportunities to stop for lunch or a refreshing drink.

Many of our guests enjoy ending their walk with a visit to the Wolds Inn at Huggate or the Cow Shed Café near Fraisthorpe before returning to the cottages to relax

Explore Beverley Without the Crowds

The historic market town of Beverley is particularly enjoyable in September.

Take your time browsing the independent shops, visiting Beverley Minster, enjoying coffee in one of the many cafés or simply wandering through the beautiful Georgian streets.

Without the hustle and bustle of peak season, you can experience Beverley at a slower pace and really appreciate its unique character.

Perfect Weather for Exploring

September often brings some of the year's most comfortable weather.

The days are generally mild, making it ideal for countryside walks, beach visits and exploring local attractions without the intense heat of midsummer.

It's also a wonderful time for scenic drives through East Yorkshire, stopping off at charming villages, farm shops and viewpoints along the way.

Make the Most of Self-Catering

One of the great advantages of visiting in September is being able to enjoy everything at your own pace.

Spend the day exploring before returning to the cottages to light the barbecue if the weather is kind, enjoy dinner together, soak in the hot tub or simply relax with a glass of wine in the garden.

As the evenings become slightly cooler, there's something especially enjoyable about spending quality time together after a day of exploring.

Ideal for Couples, Friends and Family Gatherings

September isn't just for couples looking for a peaceful escape.

It's also a fantastic time for retired travellers, friendship groups, multi-generational family get-togethers and those celebrating birthdays or anniversaries.

With Pasture House sleeping up to 12 guests and The Stables sleeping 4, our cottages provide plenty of space to bring everyone together while enjoying the quieter side of East Yorkshire.

Many returning guests tell us September is one of their favourite months to visit.

They love the peaceful atmosphere, easier access to attractions and the opportunity to experience East Yorkshire without the busy summer crowds.

Combined with our spacious accommodation, thoughtful welcome hamper, hot tubs, wood-fired pizza oven and beautiful countryside setting, it's easy to see why September has become such a popular choice.
